I rode my own ponies and horses, hunted and competed until the age of 25. Around the same time, I found an art school where I could immerse myself for four years in the good old-fashioned skills of draughtsmanship, anatomy, perspective and composition. I also spent a year travelling the world, filling sketchbooks with drawings of an endlessly fascinating subject: people.
Since 1990, I have been working as a commissioned portrait artist from my studio near Nailsworth, in the Gloucestershire countryside. People, horses and dogs are my specialisms, and all of my work is made to commission.
My portraits now hang in houses across the country. New clients largely find me through word of mouth, which feels like the most honest kind of recommendation. I also exhibit annually at Badminton Horse Trials, Gloucestershire, held in May.
In 2022, feeling the pull of something new, I began a two-year portraiture course in London specialising in oil paint. Under excellent tuition I discovered the sensuousness of oils and found great pleasure in mixing and applying this rich, varied medium in my own way.
It opened a broader way of expressing my creativity and a deeper delight in the exploration of colour. I do enjoy colour. The trio of hue, tone and saturation is the most delicious, complex puzzle for any artist, but when it resolves and works, what a joy.
